Sandy Reports

I am so happy that the "powers that be " are pulling this reunion together. As co-chairman of my college and medical school reunions, I know all the things that must have gone into getting it off the ground. At least I had official mailing lists so it makes the fact that this is happening even more impressive. I imagine the organizers "googled" a lot of us.

"A long long time ago, in a galaxy far away," I went to Cornell University (along with Dan Kathan and David Moncton) because I had a NY State Regent's scholarship and it was one of the few New York State schools that offered courses in Marine Biology.

When I graduated, however, Nixon (remember that guy?) had cut money for oceanography and put it into the space program so I was without graduate school funding. I was a little tired of school anyway, so I ventured out into the real world and got a job in a research lab at Northwestern University Med School. My boss encouraged me to go into medicine and I decided that was probably a good idea as I was liking people more than mice. I also realized that although I might be the next "Rachel Carson,", it was very likely that I would be the next "unemployed Rachel Carson," so I submitted my application. I actually got in (much to my surprise and probably because I didn't care) and attended Northwestern Medical School for the next 4 years.

I spent my internship and residency in St. Louis and Denver and ended up going back to St. Louis for the next 13 years working as a pediatric specialist in a large community hospital. I had two children (Gage and Matt) but ultimately spearated from my physician husband and moved the two children and myself to Vail Colorado. I have to tell you, if you are going to have a mid-life crisis, that's the place to go. The only down side was that I was one of the town's few pediatricians and found it difficult to balance my career and my life with my children, so after 6 years, I moved to Denver.

In 1998, I reunited with my college sweetheart, Chuck Breckheimer, and in 2000 we got married, with our four children in attendance. I met Chuck as a Sophomore in college when he was teaching an organic chemistry course that I was doing poorly in. (better than a bar I guess).

Chuck recently retired from a long career as a high school chemistry teacher and we moved to Hendersonville NC to be closer to his daughters. I am presently working with a pediatric group here but will be retiring in a few weeks. Chuck and I plan to travel a lot the next 6 months and then I may look for another career (either as a consultant practice in Holistic Pediatrics or in something entirely outside of medicine).

I've recently been in touch with Carol Addessa who was a good friend in third grade. Looking forward to seeing you Carol. Does anybody know the wherabouts of Sandy and Sally Moffett, Sally Coburn, Marty Glaze or Peggy Hoff?

My parents are still alive (Dad is 91, Mom 85) and living in Snyder. I will be home the week before the reunion so if anyone needs to contact me, they can try my parent's home. Their phone number is (716) 839-3781. My twin Gordy will be coming too. We still don't look alike.
